The right lane is the "slow" lane because originally roads were only one lane -not multiple lanes. And if your horse or horse drawn wagon caught up to the wagon in front of you, you normally passed on the right so that the driver could see you.

When cars came along, there were mostly only 2 lane roads. Since everyone in front of you drove in the right lane you had to pass on the left - because that was your only choice.

After road were built with multiple lanes, the right lane was kept as the slow land and people continued to pass on the left -just like they did when all roads were only 2 lanes and when people drove horse drawn wagons too...

The thing is, People in colorado drive on I-70 like complete morons. Noone is in the Right lane so therefore you have to pass on the right. It is insane and extremly frustrating. People need to realize the right lane is the slow lane and the left lane is the PASSING Lane!
